Coast houses, Coast bathrooms
The Central Coast was never built all at once, and its bathrooms show it. Weekend fibro shacks from the 1950s and 60s still stand along the Woy Woy peninsula and around Long Jetty. The 1970s and 80s brought street after street of brick veneer through Kincumber, Green Point, Berkeley Vale and Killarney Vale. Newer estates at Wadalba, Woongarrah and Hamlyn Terrace added double-storey homes with ensuites. And along the waterfront at Terrigal and The Entrance, holiday units stack bathrooms one above the other.
Each of those needs a slightly different plan. A fibro cottage may hide asbestos sheeting and a spongy floor. A 1980s veneer home usually has a bath under the shower and a separate toilet. An upstairs ensuite needs a membrane that protects the ceiling below. A unit needs strata sign-off before anyone lifts a tile.
What the salt air does
Living a few streets from the beach is the whole point, but moist, salty air is hard on bathrooms:
- Chrome and cheap metal fittings pit and spot. Better-grade tapware and stainless accessories last longer.
- Grout soaks up moisture and turns black. Larger tiles, epoxy or sealed grout, and fewer joints help.
- Fans that vent into the roof space just move the problem. Ducting to the outside is worth the small extra cost.
- Paint peels on ceilings. A mould-resistant wet-area paint and a fan that actually runs long enough make the difference.

Questions people ask before they commit
What does a bathroom renovation cost on the Central Coast?
As a 2026 guide only, a full main bathroom usually lands between $20,000 and $34,000, an ensuite between $15,000 and $26,000, and a compact unit or cottage bathroom between $14,000 and $23,000. Asbestos removal, moving the drainage and high-end tiles push the figure up.
How long is the bathroom out of action?
Plan on roughly three to four weeks of site work for a typical main bathroom, provided the tiles, tapware and vanity are chosen and ordered before anything is pulled out.
Why does mould keep coming back in Coast bathrooms?
Mostly because the room cannot get rid of moisture. Undersized or unducted exhaust fans, tired grout and a failing membrane behind the tiles are the usual culprits. A renovation fixes all three at once.
